How to Live

When I was in college, I used to collect quotes in a little notebook.  Just statements that touched me, hit me the right way, connected with an experience or a feeling.  While I don’t actively write down such words in a little book anymore, that doesn’t mean that I don’t often pause and contemplate when I find some words that really touch me.

Such was the case when I encountered a brief essay written by John Perry Barlow.  More than an “essay”, it was a list that he titled “Principles of Adult Behavior.”  It was written in 1977 when he was 30 years old.  (There is much to be learned about who John Perry Barlow was, with this page  being a good starting point.)  While not every single thing on that list resonated with me, most of them did.  And I found myself thinking that they might resonate with others.

What to do with this?  Well, it simmered in the back of my mind for awhile.  I wrote it in my little notebook of possible pattern ideas.  I circled back to it more than once.  And then I decided that the words seems so universal, so truthful, that I just wanted to turn them into a cross stitch pattern.  And so I did.  (Full disclosure: I used 19 of John’s 25 principles.  Simply put, I eliminated the ones that didn’t connect or resonate with me.)

I love how this turned out.

As with my other Market releases, this pattern will be available in the Hoffman Distributing room at the Nashville Needlework Market next week.  Tell you local needlework stores that are attending Market to stop by!  It will be available on my Etsy store after Market, some time after March 10.
